The unflinching realism and searing performances of Monster's Ball are stunning in all the connotations of the word. Hank (Billy Bob Thornton) and Leticia (Halle Berry) inhabit stark, queasy realities of the contemporary South, he as a death row corrections officer and she as the soon-to-be widow of an inmate (Sean Combs) whose execution Hank helps conduct. In the aftermath of the execution, both lose their children to tragic deaths and they form an unlikely bond. In the hands of lesser participants, the fateful plot might strain credibility and seem tailored to allow for liberal sermonizing about the obvious wrongs of our legal justice system, but director Marc Forster and cinematographer Roberto Schaefer balance the contentious nature of the film's issues--the death penalty, racism both overt and subtle, interracial couples--with a flawless attention to character and visual detail that completely convinces. The moral ambiguity of both central characters is given full voice as our sympathy is drawn out reluctantly at first but all the more resolutely in the end. Thornton draws from seemingly limitless resources to deliver yet another outstanding performance, but it is Halle Berry who is a revelation as she sustains throughout the complex tenor of brutality witnessed and raw courage defined. --Fionn Meade

Gritty Southern Drama.......2007-09-06
Monsters ball introduces a small but stunning variety of characters, the most which include a family that bears 3 generations of work as correctional officers at a prison set in the South. With rickety screen doors and a humidity that scours the landscape, Monsters Ball sets a great backdrop for a story of human loss as well as day to day survival. Billy Bob Thornton is great as the middle generation of correctional officers, and while his father is a hard nosed, racist jerk who is stuck in his ways, his son (played by Heath Ledger) is quite the opposite. Halle Berry plays the part of a woman whose own family is heading quickly into a downward spiral, and with race and class issues not always being at the surface, the characters show how contention between the lines can cause a ripple effect of change that is sometimes hard for others to take. Lives will be lost and other lives will change, and although the title seems to have a minimal significance to the film when one finished viewing it, it is the definition of the words that eventually seem to present every detail in its own twisted and realistic way. This film is dark and sad but at times when the light shows through, it does so with a ray of hope for the characters involved.
Halle Berry and Puff Diddy Daddy at their... best?.......2007-09-04
This was not a bad movie but I must say that Halle Berry and Puff Diddy Daddy proved that you don't have to have talent as an actor to be in a movie these days. Puffy? I can understand him stinking the joint up but Halle Berry? Halle Berry? I mean how she won an Oscar for this soft core porn scene is beyond me. She is not a very good actor and she proved it in this film.
You might want to see this movie once but that is only because Billy Bob Thornton is a good actor. But I wouldn't recommend it as something that I would want to see again. Give Halle and Oscar? Give me a break.
Harsh tale of character development.......2007-08-19
Most couples break up after they've lost a child. Grief and blame so easily destroy even the best of relationships. It's odd to see a diverse pair of people come together over the loss of their sons, overcoming age, race, and the South itself to do so.
This is definitely not a film I'd want to see again. It's stark, harsh, and brutal at its worst and painful even in the better parts. Still, it was well-done by both Thornton and Berry and Berry definitely deserved her Oscar for her performance.
Halle Berry at her best!.......2007-06-26
I saw "Monster's Ball" in the movie theatre. I felt then that it was a good movie, but the key reason I even went to see it in theatres is because Halle Berry, one of my all-time favorite actresses, was starring in it. I have seen most of Halle's movies, and I can attest to the fact that this is, acting-wise, her best film. Halle is an outstanding actress, but I have never really seen her give her all, until now. Halle really went all out for this movie, and she deserved the Oscar. Although I don't think it's fair that so many African-American actresses before Halle have done phenomenal jobs in movies and never received an Oscar, but Halle shined in this film and that Oscar had her name on it as far as I'm concerned. The ranting and raving about Halle had to be foremost, however, the entire cast did a great job. Billy Bob Thornton, Heath Ledger, Mos Def, and Diddy all showed their acting abilities, and I was impressed.
This was not an easy film to watch. It didn't have a Hollywood ending or cheesy subject matter. The film shows us three generations of corrections officers, a grandfather, a father, and a son. The father and grandfather both have prejudiced mindsets, however the son doesn't. We learn that the father (Hank) doesn't love his son, and his son does an unlikely thing to show how upset he is about that, commits suicide in front of his father.
We meet Leticia and her son Tyrell. Leticia's husband is given the death penalty, and she's naturally on-edge. She attempts to relax her nerves by smoking, drinking and lashing out at her obese progeny. As the movie progresses, Tyrell is tragically killed in a hit and run. From what the movie implies, all Leticia had was her son. She was never seen with parents or friends. After her husband and son die, she's all alone in life, until she meets Hank. Hank sees Leticia and her dying son on the side of the road and decide to stop and offer aid to them. He rushes them to the hospital, and from there, the two of them build a friendship, and then a relationship.
Hank and Leticia both feel vulnerable because of the unfortunate occurrences they both lived. Their relationship, from the outside looking in, resembles two people who are yearning for a happiness they'd seemingly never come across and hoped to find in one another.
The irony of Hank and Leticia's relationship is that Hank was one of the correction's officers who helped kill Leticia's husband, but she is oblivious to this.
This motion picture will totally lure you into it's painful plot. Other reviews that I've read on this movie said that it was boring, and perhaps to some, it is; but if you give this movie your undivided attention from start to finish, there is hardly a boring moment in my opinion.
I DO NOT recommend this picture for the faint of heart. It includes some of the most graphic scenes cinema has ever seen, and some of them are not easy to stomach. Also, that oh so popular sex scene...very candid and graphic. However, if you can handle it, by all means take a look at this heart-wrenching film.
Oh, come now...........2007-06-13
This is one of the most over-rated movies I've ever seen. It is too contrived in plot and too manipulative, particularly with respect to the sex scene between Thornton and Berry. Consider the following:
Billy Bob Thornton plays a racist prison guard who takes a sort of military pride in the structured electrocution of condemned prisoners. His son, a non-racist guard under him, is not up to the same standard. A condemned prisoner, the husband of the woman played by Halle Berry, is put to death.
Through a convoluted set of circimstances, Thornton takes up with Ms.Berry, after Thornton's son commits suicide and Berry's overweight son is killed in a car accident. Neither knows of their connection to the electrocuted prisoner until the end of the movie. The device used to reveal the connection should be obvious to any viewer Are you following this?
For some reason (perhaps the fact that Halle Berry is drop dead gorgeous) Thornton gives up his racism and has an extremely steamy sex scene with the beauteous widow. Well, that's understandable, but the fact that she is magnificent to look upon is grossly manipulative. Would Thornton have been so solicitous of her if she had been an average looking African American woman? I doubt it. Beauty trumps racism.
Several movies have been made, through the years, about a racist white becoming liberalized by association with an African American, and in virtually every case the device for attaining this has been so contrived as to make a viewer groan. In one case a blind white girl falls in love with a very nice black man. In another case, a racist white is chained to a black man and they have to cooperate to escape pursuers. In yet another, a white girl brings a black man home to meet her upper class parents--but the black man is a handsome Ivy League surgeon. Sidney Poitier, a fine actor, was in all of these.
In all of these, including Monster's Ball, the devices are just too heavy handed and obvious. The acting in Monster's Ball is OK, but the story is the problem. For example, I never believed for a second that the Halle Berry character would have said, "Make me feel good" and seduced Thornton. Why? I don't object to sexy scenes, per se. I object when sex scenes are included to titilate the viewer, and that was exactly the case in Monster's Ball.

If you're expecting bandaged-wrapped corpses and a lurching Boris Karloff-type villain, then you've come to the wrong movie. But if outrageous effects, a hunky hero, and some hearty laughs are what you're looking for, the 1999 version of The Mummy is spectacularly good fun. Yes, the critics called it "hokey," "cheesy," and "pallid." Well, the critics are unjust. Granted, the plot tends to stray, the acting is a bit of a stretch, and the characters occasionally slip into cliché, but who cares? When that action gets going, hold tight--those two hours just fly by.
The premise of the movie isn't that far off from the original. Egyptologist and general mess Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) discovers a map to the lost city of Hamunaptra, and so she hires rogue Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) to lead her there. Once there, Evelyn accidentally unlocks the tomb of Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a man who had been buried alive a couple of millennia ago with flesh-eating bugs as punishment for sleeping with the pharaoh's girlfriend. The ancient mummy is revived, and he is determined to bring his old love back to life, which of course means much mayhem (including the unleashing of the 10 plagues) and human sacrifice. Despite the rather gory premise, this movie is fairly tame in terms of violence; most of the magic and surprise come from the special effects, which are glorious to watch, although Imhotep, before being fully reconstituted, is, as one explorer puts it, rather "juicy." Keep in mind this film is as much comedy as it is adventure--those looking for a straightforward horror pic will be disappointed. But for those who want good old-fashioned eye-candy kind of fun, The Mummy ranks as one of choicest flicks of 1999. --Jenny Brown

A Thoroughly Satisfying Adventure Movie.......2007-09-07
The Mummy is high quality entertainment. It does a great job of entertaining, that's saying something. Some movies can't even do that. But this succeeds on all levels.
It's a great popcorn flick. And it's packed to the brim with action.
The DVD features a commentary from the director Stephen Sommers, deleted scenes, a few making of featurettes, and a bevy of other special features including trailers and a music only track.
If you're a fan of action, definitely recommended.
Mummy Comes To Life.......2007-08-06
I already have the standard Mummy DVD. This HD version sounds and looks better. If you love the movie buy it. If you don't, the standard DVD is fine.
Great on HD DVD.......2007-07-30
This is a excellent movie. This review is about the HD DVD version. I thought the transfer was overall excellent. However, there were a few spots where you can see lines or spots on the film (most other HD DVDs I have seen have not had lines or spots at all, so I was surprised to see some in this one). Other areas look almost 3D like. Sound is great.
Most of the special effects have held up well over time. The acting and direction are great. If you enjoy pure action / adventures with a bit of humor, and a wee bit of scariness, this movie is for you!

Absolutely Phenomenal On HD DVD.......2007-06-28
Everyone knows the plot of the movie and that it was based on the 1940s film, "The Mummy's Hand," so what I'm going to talk about is the HD DVD transfer.
I got my HD DVD player last year and have been thoroughly stoked about it, given the right movie. "The Mummy" is definitely one of those right movies. From the opening credits to the first views of the Egyptian city, the clarity of the high-def presentation rivals that of your local theater. Once a wall-sized monitor becomes available, film buffs are truly going to be able to have the theater experience right in their own homes.
The action sequences are great. The colors are fantastic. And the special effects are tremendous. The dust cloud confrontation at the end just blew me away all over again.
I owned the movie on DVD and had watched it on television a few times (it's one of those on a list of guilty pleasures) but I hadn't seen anything like this presentation outside of the theater.
Now I gotta get "The Mummy Returns" and "The Scorpion King." And I can't wait for "The Mummy 3" coming in 2008!
The Mummy Comes to life again .......2007-05-29
Not as startling as some of the more recent HD transfers. Don't get me wrong it is very good. Bringing life backing to old family favorite. The colors and sound were the most noticeable, mind you the high quality picture was not to be out done either. It was like watching a new movie. Well not quite. But there were a bunch of little things and scenes that went unnoticed before that are front and center in this edition because of the improved sound and picture.
One thing I never noticed before is right after Imhotep's casket fell through the tomb ceiling there is a line through the center of the picture, it disappeared in less than a minute. I doubt this is fault to do with the HD transfer so it was probably on the original print.
One weird thing was the menu. All of the other HD DVDs have graphics from the movie, this one had generic music and the universal logo.
Great Picture. Great Sound. Worth having on HD. Over all 4/5. Bring on Jurassic Park!

The unflinching realism and searing performances of Monster's Ball are stunning in all the connotations of the word. In the aftermath of the execution, both lose their children to tragic deaths and they form an unlikely bond.

The Nightmare Before Christmas: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
ASIN: 6304711921
Release Date: 1997-12-03 |

For those who never thought Disney would release a film in which Santa Claus is kidnapped and tortured, well, here it is! The full title is Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, which should give you an idea of the tone of this stop-action animated musical/fantasy/horror/comedy. It is based on characters created by Burton, the former Disney animator best known as the director of Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and the first two Batman movies. His benignly scary-funny sensibility dominates the story of Halloweentown resident Jack Skellington (voice by Danny Elfman, who also wrote the songs), who stumbles on a bizarre and fascinating alternative universe called ... Christmastown! Directed by Henry Selick (who later made the delightful James and the Giant Peach), this PG-rated picture has a reassuringly light touch. As Roger Ebert noted in his review, "some of the Halloween creatures might be a tad scary for smaller children, but this is the kind of movie older kids will eat up; it has the kind of offbeat, subversive energy that tells them wonderful things are likely to happen." --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Tim Burton Is A Genius Par Excellence.......2007-08-29
The Nightmare Before Christmas is one of the coolest films ever shot. Taking a viewer along on a trip into a dimension where each holiday has its own 365-day realm (it's Christmas all year, Halloween all year, Easter, etc.) Tim Burton's fantasy about Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King's, ill-fated but fabulous infatuation with Christmas becomes in these creative hands the most original movie made in the 1990's. Nothing wrong here, just a classic that'll reign for ages.
Wonderful.......2007-08-13
I was so nervous about purchasing something used from someone I did not know, but the DVD came within a few days and it is in EXCELLENT condition. Thank you so much!
This film is beautiful.......2007-08-11
I saw Nightmare before Christmas for the first time in the cinema when I was just turning twelve-years-old and I felt it was simply the most beautiful of movies I had ever seen. I simply adored it. I immediately fell in love with Tim Burton and his artistry. This is a beautiful movie for both children and adults. The animation is beautiful and the score is simply haunting. Danny Elfman was at his peak in composing the soundtrack for this enchanting fantasy, musical. This movie is simply timeless in it's beauty and in it's tribute to the old Rankin / Bass Holiday specials and Dr. Seuss has become a classic by itself. I don't have words to express the love I have for this film.
The Nightmare Before Christmas.......2007-07-17
Produced by Tim Burton (who also co-wrote the story), Henry Selick's Gothic holiday fantasy blends state-of-the-art stop-motion animation with an imaginative, light-heartedly eerie story about a clever spook who decides to reinvent Christmas. Along the way, the jack-o-lantern-headed Jack (amiably voiced by Chris Sarandon) has to square off against his evil nemesis, Oogie Boogie (Ken Page), who has sinister plans of his own. With Danny Elfman's frightfully jolly score and a bright script based on characters Burton created, this is a "Nightmare" the whole family will enjoy (though smaller fry might get spooked at times).
Still blows me away.......2007-05-28
Burton's dark love story will still take your breath away. The Nightmare before Christmas has a cult following, and it's no suprise why. The story is a most incredible, and creative story, with great music.
Kids will love it, but adults even more. I think this movie is 100 years before it's time. It's something you could only expect from Burton and it will still leave you enamored.

HD DVD transfer: 3.5
Movie 4.5
Overall: 4.0
