Jane Campion's The Piano struck a deep chord (if you'll excuse the expression) with audiences in 1993, who were mesmerized by the film's rich, dreamlike imagery. It is the story of a Scottish woman named Ada (Holly Hunter), who has been mute since age 6 because she simply chose not to speak. Ada travels with her daughter Flora (Anna Paquin) and her beloved piano to a remote spot on the coast of New Zealand for an arranged marriage to a farmer (Sam Neill). She gives piano lessons to a gruff neighbor (Harvey Keitel) who has Maori tattoos on his face, and, well, things develop from there. The picture takes on a powerful dream logic that simply defies synopsis. It's a breathtakingly beautiful and original achievement from Campion, a unique stylist. The Piano won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and Oscars for Hunt, Paquin, and Campion's screenplay. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars HOT*HOT*HOT!!!.......2007-08-20

I enjoy PERIOD films so, with a writer/director and cast, such as these, I KNEW I would NOT be disappointed. HOWEVER... "THE PIANO" went WAY BEYOND MY EXPECTATIONS! LADIES... THIS FILM IS, to use today's vernacular, the "HOTTEST FILM" I have EVER SEEN! I BELIEVE ONLY another WOMAN will TRULY COMPREHEND when I say, "Several of the scenes with Harvey Keitel and Holly Hunter are BREATHTAKING, ELECTRIFYING, Good Old Fashioned SWOONINGLY HEART-STOPPING, SHOCKINGLY LUSCIOUS, INSIDIOUSLY INTIMATE, and TORRIDLY HOT*HOT*HOT!!!" It takes a while to get to these scenes but they are DEFINITELY WORTH the WAIT!!! You MUST KNOW this film HAD TO BE WRITTEN and DIRECTED BY A WOMAN; Anna Paquin! I believe over half of the film's staff were female as well. In my opinion, NO ONE in the film industry has even gotten CLOSE to doing such a FANTASTIC JOB of LITERALLY CREATING such a MYRIAD of EMOTIONAL and PHYSICAL RESPONSES, NOT ONLY from her ACTORS but ALSO her FEMALE AUDIENCE! "Anna Paquin, Harvey Keitel, Holly Hunter and the rest of the Staff are PHENOMENAL!!!" I have the film, "The Piano", listed in my PERSONAL, "TOP 10 FILMS OF ALL TIMES"! ***I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT ANY WOMAN, who has NOT SEEN "THE PIANO", SEE IT ASAP OTHERWISE, YOU WILL BE MISSING OUT ON ONE OF THE "BEST FILMS EVER MADE"!!!

5 out of 5 stars Stirring.......2007-07-29

I had not seen this movie until now. I now see Harvey Keitel and Holly Hunter in a new light. Their performances were amazing. The movie was beautiful and stirring in so many ways. While dream like, there is an great realness to the beautiful love that develops in a non-stereotypical way. I have to own this movie so that I can periodically view this special story.

5 out of 5 stars The Piano.......2007-07-17

Set in the 19th century, Jane Campion's brilliant period tale "The Piano" was rightly lauded in 1993 for its eccentric storyline and otherworldly, dreamlike atmosphere. Despite never uttering a word, Oscar winner Hunter exudes intelligence and determination as the rebellious Ada, along with a repressed yet combustible sensuality. Anna Paquin is a marvel in her debut, exemplifying the mix of spunk and knowingness that made her a sought-after young star. Visually ravishing and exquisite, "The Piano" is Campion's visually poetic ode to our unspoken emotions.

1 out of 5 stars One star because of the music.......2007-07-10

The Piano bombed. The only positive part about this movie is the music. The parts that some might consider erotic had me reeking. If you like to read maybe you should read this book, for fiery romance, erotic excitement and a good story. While reading it play a CD with lovely piano music. See the link.At My Father's Knee

5 out of 5 stars One of the great romantic films of all time.......2007-07-07

As an aspiring filmmaker, I was informed by a colleague to watch THE PIANO because of the unique story behind this low-budget film. When I had watched this film it literally blew me away: the acting, photography, location, and the music. The music was so haunting and beautiful, I embarked out ot purchase the soundtrack. Holly Hunter was spectacular and Anna Paquin well deserved the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1993. I recommed this film to anyone, if you are the individual who believes nothing of cinema: Watch it once. You must at least see the film in order to view the contemporary aspects of the cultural differences of the Piano.

Zach Galifianakis' stand-up comedy DVD spoofs the classic recorded stand-up performance film format by interjecting road trip footage of Zach and buddy in their red VW bus, and fake interviews with Zach's fake brother, "Seth," between his live stage bits. The splintered, slackerish feel that this editing lends the film reinforces Galifianakis's cool, enigmatic stage presence. Galifianakis' self-deprecating, sensitive guy-persona suits his love of deadpan one-liners in the tradition of Steven Wright. Sketches of the forgetful vegan who accidentally eats meat, or the pretentious illiterate who indignantly proclaims that he can't read, satirically poke fun at the self-righteous. Cut to a shot of the comedian's bus broken down off the freeway, then back to stage, where Zach riffs on his failed efforts to barter jokes for a fixed vehicle. Some segments, such as when Seth confesses his brother's affinity for making homemade ecstasy, are funnier than the Purple Onion performance. Like those on the Chappelle Show, these pre-taped skits rescue slow moments and elevate the stage act into more heavily crafted commentary. Graced with a dry wit, Zach Galifianakis, the self-professed "man who is bored by everything," won't bore lovers of good sarcasm. --Trinie Dalton

Description

Zach Galifianakis started his so-called career in back of a hamburger joint in New York. Well-known and loved by the Comedy Central crowd, he is one of the Comedians of Comedy, played director Alan Finger in the series Dog Bites Man and wowed the critics with his acclaimed VH1 show, Late World With Zach.

A master of the one-liner, with an absurd rambling style, Zach's sharp, resonating humor makes his show at the famed Purple Onion in San Francisco one of the funniest performances in recent comedy.

Off-stage, you will meet Seth Galifianakis, Zach's "twin brother." In an emotional interview with Brian Unger, he sheds some light on his "brother" Zach, revealing how he came to be who he is today.

The Awkward Slapping Bit (outtake)

5 out of 5 stars This DVD sh** is his ticket out!.......2007-08-17

Zach Galifiankis is the truth.

His style of comedy isn't stand-up comedy, it's entertainment. Zach Galifiankis is one of very few comedians who can entertain you in ways funnier than 99% of the stand-behind-the-mic for 30 minutes on a Comedy Central special comedians. I'm not knocking those comics, some are very funny, but Zach's not a "Hey, my girlfriend is so different from me because.." kind of guy. He puts on a great show, and it's rare to find someone with the ability to take you on a ride like this because it's not the cookie-cutter comedy that TV networks throw sitcoms at.

His brother, Seth Galifiankis, is also hilarious here. Interview segments with NPR's Brian Unger (I know, what!?) are nothing less than brilliant, who else but Zach and Seth could pull the whole thing off? The outtakes and deleted scenes are a must, they're not just extra content to fill up the disc. Replay value on both the main feature and the extras is very high.

Buy two, because if you're like me, you'll immediately want to give this as a gift to let others experience it. For $12.99, you shouldn't think twice about buying this.

4 out of 5 stars Good comedy, cool cinematics.......2007-06-09

The stand-up portion of this DVD was funny, I wouldn't quite rate it 5/5 partially because of a rather unsuspecting use of cursing in contrast with his Comedy Central Presents shows. Still Zach is a very unique comedian that deserves some acclaim. There were also other segments to this DVD that gave it almost a documentary feel, the interview with his twin brother Seth which was hilarious and the road adventures with his friend Joe was also great. Overall I think this is a great product for somebody looking for a breath of fresh air in stand-up, as long as a little bit of cursing doesn't bother you.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as other shows!.......2007-05-13

I have been a fan of Zach Galifianakis for a long time. Zach is one of my favorite comedians, and every other special of his I have seen I always have laughed uncontrolably. But with this DVD there were some really funny parts, but the rest of the DVD is not very funny at all. I would recomend that you save your money and not by this DVD, the laughs you get are not worth the money spent.

4 out of 5 stars kinda rambling, kinda brilliant.......2007-05-13

Zach Galifianakis is one of those comedians who thrives in loose, intimate atmospheres, and Live at the Purple Onion is an excellent example of his art. I am familiar with his thing, as it were, and if you haven't heard of him, give this DVD a try, or cruise YouTube for some of his (fantastic) clips. Extra features on this concert DVD are highly entertaining, as well. A final aspect of Live at the Purple Onion I found rewarding is the insight to Zach's past, family, and hometown, and how those elements influenced his approach to comedy. Good stuff.

4 out of 5 stars classic zach.......2007-04-10

if you're a fan of zach galifianakis, then you know to expect his absurd one liners. if you haven't seen any live shows of his besides his comedy central special, then you may not be familiar with zach's hilarious habit of abandoning his routine and fully engaging the audience. both of these talents are on display in his first dvd. also are hilarious fake documentary footage of zach's "twin" brother seth. Those interviews and the behind the scenes footage are great, but sometimes can be jarring when inserted into the standup footage. that's why i gave this dvd 4 instead of 5 stars. it was done by the same people who made the comedians of comedy, which was awesome as well but suffered from the same problem. all in all though, the dvd is incredibly funny and definitely worth it if you're a fan of zach's. hopefully we'll get a zach stand-up cd soon also!

Unbelievable! That's about all I can say. I heard this guy was good, but I've never seen him play and this is the first thing of his that I've ever purchased. The preciseness and power of his technique goes beyond any keyboard player that I've ever witnessed in my lifetime.
Absolutely amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Ridiculously incredible. Absolutely authoritative........2007-06-03

Current 3rd party price $138 ? I just got this for under $30, I won't say from where, but it was not that difficult, from a huge online vendor that rhymes with Freeway. Anyway, this is one of the top 5 piano DVD's of all time. I'll bet you you $150 Gould in 1981 played this music BETTER than J.S. Bach ever did. This Bruno, who made these awesome classical music films, thank you sir. If you dig Bach and you like extremely masterful piano playing, you already have this!

5 out of 5 stars A Stunning Goldberg.......2007-03-19

We are fortunate to count three Goldberg's recorded by Gould. It is quite astonishing to watch this rendition compared to his earlier 1955 recording which most critics seem to call the "Gold" standard for this piece. Seeing Gould perform this piece in this new way with a clear linkage between the variations is something not present in the earlier release where each variation seems to stand on its own. Another big plus is that there is very little humming compared to earlier Gould and thus much less distraction to this amazing performance. I would call your attention to something not much taught in concervatories these days -- finger substitution--watch Gould's technique. ALso, he apparently play the Goldberg's completely through without stop--something contrary to his "normal" practice of combining bits and pieces of different takes to produce what you hear on a CD. Stunning photography, exquisite performance and outstanding sound make this a must-have for any musician. Observe the passion!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2006-08-05

I bought this DVD new on ebay--one seller has it almost always listed--for only $39.95 brand new. The DVD is pure amazement. I've watched it over and over and over. You'll see the best Bach student ever molding the masters work. Don't pay crazy prices here...keep looking on ebay unless the prices come down here.

5 out of 5 stars I'm one of the lucky few who own this rare DVD!.......2006-06-01

This is a must have if you love Bach and Glenn Gould. This is a very informal recital. Gould was wearing casual clothes and his 9' YAMAHA CFIII concert grand's fall board was removed. During the interview, Gould did not even wear his shoes and camera closed up his dark socks. Quite funny to see a renowned concert pianist with such an informal setting.

The problem was they didn't give Fats, Jerry Lee and Ray enough space to shine, individually. They were reduced to singers, and just members of the band. Plus, no camera shots of the keys as they were playing, only "head shots." Still, the sound quality was good and I did enjoy the concert.

5 out of 5 stars CLASSIC ROCKERS AT THEIR BEST!.......2007-05-14

The gathering of Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis and Ray Charles at the famed Storyville Club in New Orleans is a show not to be missed. Paul Schaffer of the Letterman show holds the music together and makes sure the best of all involved is brought forth. Each artist takes a turn at doing a solo set, backed up by their own bands, and then the three come together for some fabulous group music, backed up by Schaffer and band. This took place during the mid 1980's, and each artist was is top form at the time. Surely, a must have music DVD.

Product Description

From the vaults of the award-winning PBS Austin City Limits TV show, this is the latest release in the acclaimed Live From Austin, TX series.

Rock and Roll s the thing, and Jerry Lee s the King... or so said an English fan once upon a time somewhere. Elvis fans might dispute that title, but nobody else in the history of popular music would dare call himself The Killer. Of all the legends who came out of Sun Records in the 1950s Elvis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison no one would have bet the last one standing would be the pill-popping, whiskey-guzzling, gun-waving hellion from Ferriday, La. Except The Killer, of course.

Jerry Lee Lewis took black rhythm & blues, white gospel and other funky Mississippi sounds and turned them into rock and roll. But Jerry Lee s life also is, and has always been, his piano; he has kicked and banged and set on fire (literally) many of them over the course of six-plus decades.

He almost never made it to Austin City Limits. He cancelled one appearance, and only weeks before this recording on October 17, 1983, his wife died in a freak swimming pool accident at their home. But he did make it, and what we have here is one of the most amazing performances ever to go down on the ACL stage. Throughout the day he was a perfect gentleman, showing up on time and acting very graciously to one and all, but once he hit the stage, all hell broke loose. The songs speak for themselves; they re ALL here.

For many years later, Jerry Lee would carry a tape of this show to play for friends (and himself, many times). When producers tried to book him again for a return performance, the response was, Jerry Lee doesn t think he could possibly do a better show.

This DVD captures all the hits and more, and includes songs that were never aired on the original TV broadcast.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best in a Long Time.......2007-08-07

If you get nothing else, get this. I have seen many Jerry Lee Lewis performances and this one stands out - even from some of the 50's performances. In fact, I haven't found a 50's/60's performance that truly reflects the legend - this one comes close.

It is a must buy for those into rock n roll and, especially, any Jerry Lewis fan. Good on you Jerry.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome long-rumored excellent performance.......2007-08-02

It does not get any better than this. If you buy few DVDs buy this one and Last Man Standing.

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2007-07-24

As always you get a performance that is first class from Mr.Lewis.What marks this apart from other shows is that Jerry had just lost his wife to a drug overdose. You can see and feel the pain in the performances from that night in the slow numbers.Where else can someone like Jerry Lee turn to other than the music to console themselves.
This is a must buy for anyone who likes to see the very essence of music.

5 out of 5 stars Jerry Lee in the 80s.......2007-07-14

The performance is a treat; thanks to New West for releasing this. There is no question in my mind who "the last man standing" from the 50s-rockers is. I agree with the previous reviewer who ranks this artist with the best of the all-time rock and rollers, not to mention his excellent country and western music. We had one chance to see him on this wonderful tv show and now we can see it whenever we want!

5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2007-07-07

I am not sure what the previous reviewer meant when he said Lewis just did this for the money. Isn't that what all performers do? This is not "dreck". Jerry Lee Lewis is an incredible musician who can pretty much do anything with his voice and his piano. And if he is trying to pay the IRS, then that is a good thing, right? He had a lot of energy in this performance, and he did what he does best, sing and play. For those of us who were too young, or not allowed to even hardly know he existed, it has been a revelation to hear all the music he has done in the past 50 years. He is one of the few musicians I want to see and not just listen to. I am very grateful that the old videos are being released, and hope for more in the future. If you like Jerry Lee Lewis I believe you will appreciate this video.

Sam Peckinpah knew he couldn't call a movie Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia and get away with it. That's why he did it. When he undertook this nakedly personal project, in self-exile in Mexico, the director was a deeply bitter man out of favor with critics, the media, and the Hollywood establishment, which had just released his Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid in a mutilated version. "Bring Me the Head..." sounded like the parody title of an ultraviolent Sam Peckinpah movie, and he flung it in our faces just as his onscreen surrogate tosses the titular object at the camera.

Thing is, the movie is a masterpiece--raw, shocking, beautiful, and brave--in which Peckinpah confronts his enemies and his own demons. Warren Oates plays a gringo piano-player stuck in Mexico who hears that some powerful men are willing to pay a bounty on a guy he knows. They don't know the guy is already dead, killed in a car accident. It'll be easy to exhume the trophy and collect the money--except that it will cost our seedy hero everything he has and ever wanted.

John Huston's Treasure of the Sierra Madre had always been a key legend for Peckinpah; this film is a subterranean re-imagining of it, with Oates as both the son of Fred C. Dobbs and the carnival-mirror reflection of Peckinpah himself. And Isela Vega's performance as the sainted whore Elita--bruised and worldly one minute, radiant and clear-skinned as a child the next--is an act of grace. --Richard T. Jameson

4 out of 5 stars Great non-Western,Western.......2007-08-20

I sat down to watch this under the impression it was a Western, and for the first 5 minutes, one cannot tell it is set in the 70's. A prominent Mexican jefe puts an edict on the gigolo who impregnated his young daughter. "Bring me the head of Alfredo Garcia!!" he declares to a large group of minions, thugs and general bad guys filling his palacial hacienda. The gates of the compound fly open and out roll a caravan led by horses and followed by car. I guess the suprise is seeing this Old West mentality practiced in modern times, great directing trick!
I love the way this film looks, the styling is old, the Mexican countryside beautiful, like a slightly more urban spaghetti western.
The shootouts not sophisticated, but Warren Oates makes it work as a loser with nothing to lose and little regard for his life or anyone elses after suffering another huge loss in his grizzled life.

3 out of 5 stars Passionate and powerful film - even if not one of my favorites.......2007-07-30

***This comment may include spoilers***

Not often a movie would make both the Best and the Worst movies ever made list and "Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia" is one of them. One thing is for sure - it is hard to forget. It is certainly not my favorite movie ever made and I found it sometimes laughable - not once but twice, the guards of the important persons would let a suspiciously looking stranger go and talk to their bosses not even trying to search him for a weapon. But there is a lot of power and intensity and genuine feeling of despair, and incredible acting by Warren Oates (Bennie) and the rare chemistry between him and Isela Vega (Elita) and the poignant friendship between Bennie and ...the head of Alfredo Garcia. When I watched it, I kept thinking, "Dead man walking" and by the end, it has become clear to me that the movie was about dead men - everyone in the movie was doomed. It brought to my mind the ancient Greek legend about the head of Gorgona Medusa that would turn to stone any mortal who dared to look at it. The legend actually works in the movie because every man who dared to look at it (including El Jefe, the rich and powerful man who gave the order to bring him the head of Alfredo Garcia). The only male who avoided the curse of the head, was a newborn son of Alfredo - he escaped with his mother.

5 out of 5 stars Fearless. Honest. Wonderful........2007-07-10

Sam Peckinpah casts a cold eye on events of the bleakest tragedy and blackest comedy in this masterpiece. Why is it a masterpiece? Because it steadily improves with age, and gets better with each viewing. Only truthful, genuine works of art do that. I can remember people, of limited intelligence, deriding it when it first came out, but where are those clowns now? Warren Oates's performance is a major tour-de-force. The sensations experienced by his character, Bennie, are panoramic. Almost every scene is a surprise, even when you know what's coming. One of the most jolting incidents that I have ever seen on film is when Sappensly, one of the two smiling hit-sisters, elbows a hooker to the floor. It has an impact similar to the nose-slitting scene in Chinatown, another masterpiece of similar bleakness. But there are many other equally memorable events in Oates's grimy Mexican odyssey. The story has touches of other tales of a man's search for El Dorado, Shangri La, the Crock of Gold at the rainbow's end. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, or Clouzot's Wages of Fear, come to mind, among many others; which does not mean that Peckinpah's story isn't completely original. There is even a slight undercurrent of Hamlet, as pointed out on the audio commentary by the "Peckinpah scholars", which is helpful, if somewhat egocentric. Every performance is top-notch, the cinematography, the cutting and the pacing are superb. This is certainly a great film: one of the greatest.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dramatic Hardcore.......2007-06-03

This Title says it all and for $1,000,000 Cash the action and suspense fills this movie. Gritty, Intense, VIOLENT, DARK HUMOR! This movie was ahead of it's time. So was Director Sam Peckinpah.

5 out of 5 stars Still Holds Up.......2007-05-26

I watched this movie 2 days ago, and as usual it had a lasting effect on me. I would have to almost go out on a limb and say this may be Peckinpah's most complex and brilliant work; The storyline starts as a basic premise, then gets a little more complicated mid-way through. For a film made in the early '70's, the dialog still stands strong, the desert-like landscapes are captured perfectly, the acting/characters are are both commanding and quirky, which was something you did not see done alot in early '70's films, let alone done well. Most of the action comes to a boil in the last half hour or so, but I didn't really care. Oates takes control as the lead, which is nice to see; He is a charismatic leading tough guy type, and here he gets his moment; The German guys are quite amusing, esp. at the end when their relationship becomes a little more defined in a strange way. This is probably as close to a Tarantino movie as Peckinpah ever got, and it's just as worthy. 'The Getaway' was a good movie, but this one is soooo much better. On par with 'Straw Dogs' and 'The Wild Bunch', yet different.

5 out of 5 stars Pete Sears teaches piano.......2007-03-22

The dvd is a joy to watch and listen to. Mr. Sears is going to give you musical concepts that you will have to practice with and develop to create your own personal expressions. The tools he gives are the ones that artists who play "by ear" use. Mr. Sears love for music and the joy he feels as he expresses himself on the piano and his desire to share his path with us comes warmly through. The emphasis is on the blues. You will not learn individual songs here, but rather the ideas that go into blues and improvisational playing. This DVD is just a starting point. But a good one.

5 out of 5 stars Best DVD out there.......2007-02-15

I am brand new player, This DVD is right on target. It covers everything from Half steps, to chords to reading music. I can't understand someone saying this isnt for beginners. He even tells you what kind of CHair to buy. If you are going to spend money, this is the best money to spend. Granted he does jump around, and some of it might seem confusing. Watch the whole DVD and you will understand. If you are looking for music theory and learning for real look here, if you are looking for mary has a little lamb, or twinkle twinkle look else where. I rented almost all the DVDs out there on this subject, and this one is the best hands down so far. About 10 times more useful information on it, and I can't believe the DVD is only 17$.

4 out of 5 stars Great insruction; adequate DVD layout.......2006-11-20

Like the other reviewers, I am a beginning adult piano student. And like most of us, I'm going through a plethora of books and DVDs to find the "right" one. Pete Sears' DVD comes pretty darn close. He has a very conversational style that would almost make you think he's a little "spacey", but that is far from the case. He provides a very solid (and I believe) very classical approach to piano instruction. However, the DVD is a long lecture - not sub-divided into specific topics. I found it very cumbersome to go back to a paritcular point. I strongly suggest that you go to his website and download the script to the DVD (I use the script as a textbook when I'm practicing his exercises). Its all there and its a "must" if you really want to get the most out of his very good approach to piano instruction.

2 out of 5 stars not for beginner.......2006-10-13

I bought this DVD hoping to learn how to play chords on piano or keyboard. With three years of piano lessons I was able to kind of follow the instructor. It's definitely not for beginner. I learned some new music theory. Each topic would be better if the instructor includes familiar songs to demonstrate or examplify. Overall I would not recommend this to eager learner or those who are looking for introductory or systematic instructions to learning piano or keyboard.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Instruction.......2006-09-20

I am indebted to Mr. Sears for sharing his expertise in this DVD. It represents three hours of very well presented instructional material. His presentation style is a delight, and it is joy to a count this top professional among my teachers. I've reviewed a large number of piano instructional DVD's and this one stands out as my all time favorite. It is also very reasonably priced. If you are a beginner expect to review this DVD more than once.

His ending dialog on music appreciation is in itself almost worth the price of the DVD.

Again, thank you Mr. Sears. I hope you will one day do another.

This adaptation of the Dr. Seuss book about pollution and environmental damage may be a bit heavy for younger kids. But children age six and older, as well as adults, will find much to ponder in its story of capitalist greed gone amok. The Lorax is a creature that once lived in a beautiful paradise, populated by animals and trees. When Mr. Once-Ler comes along and starts cutting down trees to make the profitable (but useless) Thneeds , the Lorax voices concern, saying, "I speak for the trees! Let 'em grow! They say I'm old fashioned and live in the past, but sometimes I think progress progresses too fast." Mr. Once-Ler ignores the Lorax's warnings, and lives to regret it. Eventually, paradise has become a barren wasteland. All the trees are cut down; the factory has closed; the animals, birds, and fish have fled; and the air is polluted. Even the Lorax is gone. The fate of the Lorax is put in the hands of a young child at the end, when the chastened Once-Ler gives him the last tree seed, with the admonition: "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing will change." The themes of capitalism, depletion of resources, and selfish affluence may be a bit heavy for kids under five, but with some parental guidance this makes for an educational and moving tale that can spark family discussions about the importance of respecting the wealth we all inherit from the natural world. --Elisabeth Keating

5 out of 5 stars This is a story every family should have access to .......2007-03-02

My boys love this story, and what's more, it's not pointless entertainment. It's an important message about being better stewards of our environment. We do everything we can at home to do our part, but this story drives the point home why it's so important.

Great story, very well told. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars So that's what it was called!.......2006-05-20

I remember seeing "Pontoffel Pock and His Magic Piano" when I was very young (I was born in 1982), but haven't seen it in ages and the name of it slipped me for a long time (I always mixed it up with "Oh The Places You Will Go!"). I remember being young and liking the magic piano with the colorful buttons--it was like a player piano--to escape, he would push a colorful button and would fly away on his piano as it played a fanciful tune. Wow.

I am really well-versed when it comes to obscure Dr. Seuss cartoons--and I love them all. I had a boss several years ago who was a fan of the Lorax, but I haven't seen this one in years.

Finally I figured out the title!!!! And I can remember liking this one. I would love to see it again!!!

5 out of 5 stars Lorax - Fond Memories, Pontoffel - Wow.........2005-01-05

We rented The Lorax because I realized I hadn't seen it since 1978 on a reel-to-reel tape in my elementary school library but I loved it. Somehow 27 years later I knew a lot of words to the songs, but was struck by how much the message of the movie is relevant today. If anything, these days this movie would not be shown in a public school or on television because the FCC would investigate its subversive message of enviromentalism, critique of consumerism, and caring for others.

As for Pontoffel Pock & His Magic Piano - I have no memory of this movie, and I have to say that it is one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen. Let's just say Theodore Giesel meets Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey and keep it at that.

5 out of 5 stars Extreme Fading In The Lorax But Good Nonetheless.......2004-10-05

The Lorax is one my favorite Dr. Seuss cartoons. Obviously Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss) had many different things on his mind when he wrote The Lorax. While many kids enjoy this story, many of them, most likely, will not be able to see one of the messages Dr. Seuss incorporated into the story: Corporate greed.
The cartoon is very well done, but I noticed extreme color fadings on the cartoon. It's not as crisp and bright as the ones I've seen growing up. In fact, this is the worst presentation I've seen The Lorax in. There are also a few scenes where the color finally gets brighter, but then a few seconds later, it turns to dull coloring again.

I have not seen the second cartoon on this DVD but plan to soon.

In a nutshell, The Lorax is a fine cartoon. But the extreme color fading of the film is most likely the worst presentation it has been given in. It is still worth the buy.

5 out of 5 stars Just as charming as I remember.......2004-07-22

The environmentally conscious Lorax appears here in an expanded version of the Dr. Seuss book, where we see more about how the profit-minded Once-Ler destroyed the truffula trees. My kindergartener loved the book, and I happened across this tape at Wal-Mart in a bargain bin. Having seen it as a kid myself, it was a natural purchase. She's watched it eight times in three days, so it must have stood the test of time! The music is a bit dated, sure, but she won't care about that for a few years yet, and it's pure nostalgia for my wife and me. The story even strikes the correct balance between commercial interests and environmentalism: Just take care of nature while you're creating jobs, and all will be well. But if you don't.....yikes.

The forgotten story included here is about Pontoffel Pock, a loser of a young man who can't get his simple two-step job right and gets fired. He is given a magic piano so he can "get away from it all," and of course he fouls that up too, but eventually figures out how to rescue a damsel in distress. My little girl doesn't quite get the romance aspect of this story, but we both enjoy the fantasy. Not in the league of "The Lorax," but cute.

Luc Besson wrote and directed the stylish thrillers La Femme Nikita and The Professional; though he didn't direct Unleashed, the script has his trademark fusion of outrageous sentimentality and over-the-top violence. Hong Kong action superstar Jet Li (Romeo Must Die, Hero) stars as Danny, a man raised to be a brutal attack dog by a nasty gangster named Bart (Bob Hoskins, Mona Lisa)--when Bart removes Danny's collar, Danny pulverizes everyone in the room. But a chance encounter with a blind piano tuner (Morgan Freeman, Million Dollar Baby) reveals to Danny the possibility of a less brutal life, and when a retaliation attack gives him the chance to escape, he does--but Bart won't let him go that easily. The fighting in Unleashed is effectively jolting; Li and fight choreographer Yuen Wo Ping (The Matrix) have purposefully stripped away the smoothness of most movie combat (especially with a genuine martial artist like Li) with raw, unnerving results, especially when juxtaposed with the sweet and earnest scenes of Li regaining his humanity with Freeman and his step-daughter (Kerry Condon). This freewheeling cocktail of bloody noses and ice-cream cones isn't for everyone, but fans of both Besson and Li will leave satisfied. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Unleashed.......2007-06-10

If I had seen it at the movies I would have asked for my money back! No climax, bad storyline and acting. The initial fight was the only decent fight scene in the whole movie.

4 out of 5 stars Jet Li: From Canine to Human.......2007-05-28

Jet Li's martial arts acting career has shifted from pure martial arts either as the hero or villain to roles that require him to radiate emotion in between the fight scenes. In UNLEASHED, he continues this mid-life metamorphosis as Danny, a very confused mob muscle enforcer who wears a dog collar when not carrying out his boss's lethal orders. Bob Hoskins is Bart, the evil boss whose frequent ruminations about the philosophical underpinnings of evil bring to mind a similar role from MONA LISA. Here, he takes off Danny's collar as a symbolic unleashing of the brute canine desire to rend that he is sure lies just beneath the surface. And for the first half of the film, we are as sure as Bart that Danny is exactly as Bart sees him. Danny shows no emotion as he quickly dispatches hordes of flunkies who suffer the great misfortune to be late on their mob loans. He shows even less emotion as he seems adjusted to living in the human dog cage that he calls home. But little by little, Danny begins to shed his canine surface. Indeed, for a while we are not even sure if Danny can speak. When Danny meets a blind piano tuner Sam (Morgan Freeman), we can sense that the bullying that Danny has endured at the hands of Bart will be replaced by the infinitely wiser and gentler hands of Sam, who sees in Danny a young man who can help him in that now Sam has a reason to teach the intricate art of piano tuning to a worthy student. It is when Danny escapes his collar that he becomes fully human, and when he confronts an unwilling Bart who attempts to reconnect Danny to his canine roots, we can see that Danny has made the light years long jump from unthinking dog to thinking man.

The fight scenes are of course well done and Jet Li's fans will find no fault with them. But for those recent fans who have become used to a Jet Li who can command center stage with a flick of the eye rather than a deadly kick, UNLEASHED is an action film that adds just enough human drama to showcase him as an actor who can fight rather than a fighter who can act.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-13

I've always been a fan of fighting movies. I'm a guy i can't help it. This one is different. Not only does it have great action scenes, it also has some compelling drama scenes as well. Jet Li did an incredible acting job on this movie. I was amazed at how well he performed this roll and with an actor like Morgan Freeman as well this movie was bound to be great. I was really moved be the story line of this movie.

2 out of 5 stars Willingly suspend your disbelief...PLEASE!.......2007-04-28

This was an interesting movie to watch because of Jet Li's amazing martial-arts skills. He truly is gifted. Unfortunately, Jet Li alone can't keep this from being unbelievable and silly. I was hoping it was going to be more along the lines of LA FEMME NIKITA and LEON: THE PROFESSIONAL, two very good movies, but I was wrong. They both had better scripts and plots that were well-developed. This movie seemed to be ad-libbed as the camera rolled. It was just too hard for me to suspend disbelief willingly. For example, at the end of the movie, after Jet Li fights a small army of goons half-destroying an aprtment building in the process while beating most of them up, a handfull of gun toting bad guys shoot hundreds of bullets through windows and doors and then vanish. Danny (Jet Li) confronts his master Bart (Bob Hoskins) and pummels him before Sam (Morgan Freeman) smashes a flower pot over Bart's head to knock him cold, preventing Danny from killing him and thereby saving Danny from reverting back to his previous trained attack-dog nature. What happened to the other members of the gang? Where were the police during the battle? Why, in the next scene, do we see Danny and Sam in tuxes at Sam's step-daughter's piano recital? Was the connecting scene left on the cutting room floor? I guess you'd have to really like martial-arts action to enjoy it. The movie just didn't work for me.

5 out of 5 stars I loved this movie 5/5 stars.......2007-04-23

One of the best martial arts movie and best actors. Danny (jet li) who was adopted and raised by the ruthless mob leader bart (bob hoskins) is trained very well how to fight as an expert of martial arts and as an unbeatable weapon against barts mob of enimies with the release of dannys leash. Then a blind piano player (morgan freeman) takes danny into his life to start a new life and a new family which danny loves the most and can see what it's like to be treated like a human instead of an abused animal in slavory that makes danny a very kind person who doesn't want to hurt people anymore. I thought bob hoskins played the perfect bad guy he's one of the best actors for this movie and he's one of my favorite actors too.

Created by Stephen J. Cannell (The Rockford Files, 21 Jump Street, among others), the USA Network's Silk Stalkings was about as sexy as non-premium cable TV got in the early 1990s. Palm Beach homicide detectives Rita Lee Lance (Mitzi Kapture) and Chris Lorenzo (Rob Estes) investigate crimes they call "silk stalkings," murders that expose the seamy--and steamy--side of high society. Rita and Chris investigate the crimes, frequently by going undercover (so to speak) to expose macho men or their beautiful women companions, who tend to lounge about in swimwear or lingerie. During the first season, the detectives face ghosts from their pasts and push the edge of their profession (Ben Vereen plays their exasperated captain, a role later filled by Charlie Brill), all the while swapping sexual innuendo but dating other people with disappointing results. The platonic-partners schtick is nothing The X-Files or Moonlighting didn't do with more style, but the stars did have a chemistry that in later years their replacements were never able to re-Kapture.

In addition to the 22 episodes, the DVD set features 39 minutes of interviews with Cannell, an almost unrecognizable Estes, a straight-haired Kapture (both stars talk about each other, their departures, and other cast members), and a nostalgic Vereen, plus a joint reminiscence between Cannell and Vereen. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Better than I even remember.......2007-08-16

One more t.v. series I came across while looking on Amazon that I added to my Wish List and received as a birthday present. I was skeptical of my taste in the early 90s vs. today. I remember thinking it was a kind of a newer, maybe shallower Miami Vice-style, that was pretty risqué for regular cable t.v. I used to watch it sporadically on USA late at night, but probably never saw two episodes in a row.

My fiancée and I watched the first episode with my parents. None of us really got into it and I felt a little disappointed. A little while later (days? a week?) my fiancée and I were looking for something to watch that wasn't too long, so we gave it another whirl. After the second episode we were hooked and preceded to watch a bunch, one after another. We cruised through the First Season way too fast that I even found myself watching the Extras! To make a long story short, we're about half way through the Fifth Season now and dread the inevitable, that this is the last season out on DVD.

Yes, there is 90s cheese, florescent outfits that we can't believe we thought were cool, some questionable hairdos, swimsuits, only large-chested women always seemingly getting out of a pool at the crime scene wearing a thong bikini, every episode opens with a sex scene that ends in someone's death, and the list goes on and on. However, we are totally hooked and love every episode and season! It's part romantic comedy, part t.v. detective series drama. I loved Miami Vice, but usually didn't find myself laughing whereas with Silk we are laughing during every episode and feeling good at the end of them. There also is very little blood and gore. You get the idea of what happened, but often see no blood when someone is killed. The chemistry between Chris and Rita as well as them and the others characters is great. I would say our only disappointment is you get attached to a few characters that all of the sudden never show up again in an episode (some of the coroners, Cotton, etc.). Also, they are kind of bad about reusing characters that had such strong parts in episodes that it is sometimes weird to see them again in a different episode as someone different. All in all, 5-Stars!

5 out of 5 stars cheesy season.......2007-03-07

This was the cheesy season, but I still got hooked. You can tell it was low budget. It still worked and I still love it.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-02-21

My hubby is a groupie for this series, so he is thrilled with it. Good quality, basic packaging, but full of everything he wanted.

5 out of 5 stars Top Cop Pairs.......2007-01-03

Crime solving among the rich and famous, with only hints of sex is a perfect setup for a Sunday afternoon DVD.This is not about credibility, its not about gore, its about a couple of detectives or a detective couple having fun.

4 out of 5 stars "Rich, sexy and decadent".......2006-09-29

I watched "Silk Stalkings" when it first aired and I never missed an episode. It is a crime drama set in Palm Beach, Florida. Palm Beach, a place where the rich and beautiful have a different set of rules and if you like provocative and fun, you'd enjoy this show.

The show is like "chocolate". It is sweet, delicious and decadent; you know it is probably bad for you but you keep endulging.

I have purchased all five seasons of "Silk Stalkings" for my library and I recommend this series. Keep in mind that season 5 has dramatic surprises and changes.

For a show that takes you to a world of the rich, sexy and dangerous-it is another winner created by Stephen J. Cannell. You can't go wrong by paying a visit.
